I'm so glad I snatched up this topic before anyone else!
It will be interesting researching this topic and comparing it to the ideas and perceptions garnered from popular media that I already have about cults.
Of special interest is:
- the practices and rituals of cults that have a psychological basis.
- what is the difference between a cult and a religion, and how big the difference is.
- currently practicing cults in Australia or elsewhere.
- whether the often-mentioned Scientology 'cult' is actually a cult at all.
- are cults actually bad??

The idea of cults has always intrigued me too! I watch an episode of Australian story about a young guy who was a member of the ‘Jesus Christians’ and wanting to donate a kidney to a terminally ill lady in Canada (A great thing to do!). Hey Emily! another interesting topic (I think I must be saying that on everyones blog but its true!) I would love to hear some of the definitions out there of how people define cults ect..?? What criteria (if any) needs to be met to be called a cult.. mmm.. very interesting!
It does look you were smart in picking your subject for blog 2!!It would be interesting to find out if you discover any nice stories about cults and the contribution they have made to the community or their members' lives. We've all heard many horror stories of how they suck in people generally at a low point in their life. Getting off the subject a little but Scientology is a particularly interesting one as Mr Hubbard started the "religion" when it looked like he was going to have a major tax debt from his sci fi novels.....there are very favourable tax exemptions and concessions for religions.....
